2011 Busti Apple Festival

2010 Busti Apple Festival

This Sunday stop by the 39th Annual Busti Apple Festival!

My favorite time of year… If you missed last year’s recap click here.

The history of the Apple Festival can be found on The Town of Busti’s website.

I’ll be there around 11:00… milling around the cider, cheese and fresh breads. Remember to go through the mill to peak at all the antiques! I think it’s a good year for apple’s too. Our tree is packed with apples.

This year our friend Erin came with us. Dare, I say it? Yes, it was her first time to the Busti Apple Festival. I love newbies. I did work out a little song for the event early yesterday morning and shared it with my fellow apple festival goers. As I mentioned on facebook, due to my rather horrible voice, I will not be sharing with you our readers. It’s all for the best.

Busti Apple Festival is Sept. 26

The Historic Busti Mill, location for the annual Busti Apple Festival
Fans of antique tools and pioneer equipment are invited to take a trip back in time during the 36th annual Busti Apple Festival, which takes place throughout the day on Sept. 26 on the grounds of the Busti Historical Society. The event will feature demonstrations of 19th century tools and other items associated with the pioneer life, along with arts and crafts, a farmers market and other food and, of course, plenty of apples.
History
The festival is the direct successor to the Busti Pioneer Crafts Festival, which is considered to be the original craft festival of southwestern New York. The first such festival was held on Sept. 16 & 17, 1972 and patterned after a similar festival held in Madison County, New York. The first Busti Apple Festival took place three years later in 1975.
Attractions
The demonstrations for this year include a wide variety such as spinning and weaving, quilting, flax breaking, candle making, log hewing and soap making. Antique and model engines, mill tours, grain milling and more will also be offered. Anyone who has an appreciation for the tools used to complete such tasks is encouraged to attend. Busti, as a community, took an increased interest in antique tractors last year and several were exhibited at last year’s event and are expected this year as well.
Demonstrations, include log hewing, will take place
There will also be live, one-room school demonstration so attendees can get an idea of how an old school house was run during the 19th century. Allie Withers, the authentic one-room school mistress will be on the job three times throughout the day.
Authentic One-Room School Demonstration
Live music will also fill the air throughout the day, thanks to the Old Dawg Bluegrass Band that was so well received last year. Authentic old time square dance caller, Howard Blumenthal from Bradford, Pa., will give a sample of the kind of dancing that was popular in Busti and all around 50 and 75 years ago.

Food
A large variety of food will be made available, including over 600 pies for sales (apple, cherry, blackberry, peach and more), along with hundreds of gallons of cider, authentic apple butter, beef on kummelweck, hot dogs, hamburgers, funnel cakes, baked goods, and more. Bushels of apples will also be available for purchase. More than a hundred different craft vendors will also be on hand.
Plenty of pie for everyone!
The Busti Apple Festival runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is held rain or shine and is handicapped accessible. Children under 12 are admitted for free. Admission for adults is $3. Parking is free.
All proceeds go toward the restoration of the Busti Mill. Take part in an annual fall tradition and attend the Busti Apple Festival Sept. 26 in Busti.
