Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Memorial Day are right around the corner, which means it’s picnic time. Last year I picked up this cute little cake saver at the flea market up at Dart Field. If you really want to get your cake noticed bring it one of these vintage finds.

Old Sheffield Plate

HISTORY- Old Sheffield Plate-Plate Warmer circa 1785. Before the advent of microwaves, a plate of food would be kept warm by putting coals in the bottom portion of the plate, while the top would be used for the placement of food. Old Sheffield plate is now highly sought after due to it’s rarity and age, it was only produced in quantity for around 100 years starting during the 1740′s. However, more recent electroplated silver and cheaper low quality imports are often passed off as genuine Old Sheffield Plate.

Old Sheffield Plate is the process of fusing a layer of silver on to a layer of copper and the process was discovered by accident by Thomas Boulsover in 1742. The process was an instant success, as it allowed silver smiths to produce pieces that had all the attractiveness of silver at a fraction of the cost. One of the drawbacks of Old Sheffield plate is that the silver wears away to reveal the copper underneath. Old Sheffield Plate became obsolete with the arrival of cheaper and easier process of Electroplating in the 1840′s. The insignia of discipline, fidelity, and perseverance. A motto of fortitude and steadfastness.

Primitive Knife Sharpener

Primitive Knife Sharpener

For Kitchen Gadget Tuesday, we share with you an Early American knife sharpener. This wooden gadget straps in a sharpening stone with wire. The pieces measures a little over a foot long.

A Meal in a Glass

The container measures 6" high and 3" wide.

I bring you the Toddy Mixer. This would be my second toddy mixer. There was a severe accident which made it imperative to get another one. Meaning clutzy me broke the first one.

Anyway, when I first found this one at the Salamanca Mall, I though how cute to go in my bar. Plus a green wooden knob made it a bonus buy! It then became known as my mojito/cosmo toddy maker (I do have a special mojito recipe which I’ll share with you). Only today when I decided to research my kitchen gadget did I realize it was not met for such spirits.

It was used to mix a malted milk drink from Maltop, Inc of nearby Buffalo NY. Atleast, that’s what all the seller’s on ebay say. All I can say is that it makes a great cosmo:)

Some advertising of the malted concoction:

“Get one of these and you will join the army of millions of steady drinkers of Toddy. A food drink so nutritious, so well balanced yet so light, easily digested and quickly assimilated that you can go right out and work or play with new pep and energy…”

The bottom has Toddy himself and it reads “Meal in a Glass”

TODDY MIXER!
It’s after 4:00 pm here. It’s legal and
I believe it will give me that pep & energy that it states.
Check out this Vintage Toddy Treasury I made up on Etsy.

Ahh how silly I was to think that the vintage toddy was for spirits. For more info on my silliness check out my post at ChautauquaAntiques.com

February Inspiration

I was looking for inspiration to write about this week. The snow is finally getting to me and perhaps my workload. As I was brewing a cup of tea this morning the sun came through the blinds in the kitchen and highlighted my potting bench. So the sun chose the topic today. It’s not very often that sun rays have snuck into our windows of late.

P2100053
That’s right I have a potting bench in my kitchen. My husband surprised
me one of the first years we moved into the house with my own potting bench.
The elements were pretty harsh with it and I didn’t want to get rid of it.
So I reuse it in the kitchen for gadget and
holder of baskets and fun stuff.
P2100054
This is a cute little black and white cup. I do have the saucer. I had a
string of pearls plant in here that D-I-E-D. It did so well outside.
I brought it in for winter and death hit it!
You can see it in its heyday here.
P2100055
Oh yeah green handled meat grinder.
P2100056
I keep my handy dandy sugar dusters close by.
You just never know when you need to dust some sugar!
P2100057
My Grandma Coffin had these Snow White cups for us kids when we were little.
Three grand daughters created nasty fights on who would get the Snow White Cup.
Who wants a grumpy cup when there was Snow White.
And just so you know I think I had the best argument… I did have the dark hair… Just saying!
Last Christmas, I found them on Ebay and set them out to my cousins.
I have the whole collection I’ll share with you later.

A nice little jadeite piece. I started collecting jadeite when I was in high school.

Double, Double Toil and Trouble

Look at what my mom decided to share with me this weekend. I love my mom who buys in pairs and forgets she has two. While cleaning out her massive fireplace she found an extra black cast iron stew pot.  My husband and I were delighted to scoop it up. Why? The main reason for our Halloween Witch Motif, of course!

Cast Iron Kettle

I have plenty of other plans for this new addition. Perhaps red geraniums on the porch.

Black Kettle Magazine Holder

But for now I think it will hold some magazines by our love seat.

Cast Iron Kettle

I suppose in a later post… I’ll show you how to clean up the rust inside.
I just didn’t have the getty up and go for that one this weekend.
I wonder what exciting things my stew pot whipped up? Maybe some beans?

Bottle Opener

Pepsi Cola - 2 different era's

Yes, I’m old enough to remember when soda was sold in glass bottles. One bottle of Pepsi was divided three ways for dinner. It was a special treat!

This handy little bottle opener would pop the top off your pop bottle.
Alas, they weren’t twist off caps. In our house, somehow the opener always went missing and what a to do.
Now, I still use one to get into those precious corona bottles:)

Santa Brought me a Chopper

That’s right! Santa, well actually, my parents got me a new chopper for Christmas. I believe she got this piece at the Whistle Stop Antique Mall in Corry, PA.

One of my other presents was a new camera… I haven’t had time to play with it too much but just you wait! Did any of you get any good antiques for Christmas?
